I completely dig Better Homes and Gardens Old fashioned cookbooks. To me they had some of the best recipes. My mother always makes the same types of candies and cookies and treats for Christmas each year, and many of her recipes came from B&H. My sweet fiance got this book from a charity table for me as a gift and I'm delighted - many pictures, fun cookies and displays for children's teas and parties, a wide variety of cookies, bars, brownies, fudges, and much more with unusual styles and a larg I completely dig Better Homes and Gardens Old fashioned cookbooks. Have used this book for many years. Love the peanut butter crinlkes recipe and some of the Christmas cookie recipes like: Springerle, sugar cookies, spritz, & ginger bread people.

There is some overlap between this book's cookies half and Homemade Cookies. Scotch Teas, for example, are exactly the same recipe; one slight difference is that Homemade Cookies tends not to include salt in the ingredient list, mentioning it only in the description; this book does include salt in the ingredient list.

All three of the cookie recipes I chose for my Christmas baking yesterday are not duplicated in Homemade Cookies, as far as I can tell, which is an indication that the overlap is mi

I had expected that of the three recipes, I would end up choosing one or two as phenomenal enough to give out. But it turned out that all three were amazing. I made the "Frosted Mocha Drops" because I thought it might be nice to make some coffee-flavored cookies for friends who enjoy coffee. I don't—but I do like these cookies, a lot. Very richly chocolate, with a coffee-flavored chocolate frosting. This was a standard drop cookie.

The "Crisp Pecan Slices" are a refrigerator cookie, rolled into a tube and then sliced off as needed. They're flavored with pecans, of course, finely chopped, but also lemon juice and peel. These are melt-in-your-mouth crispy.

And finally, the "Crisp Ginger Cookies" are fairly simple brown sugar crisps, with candied ginger added on top. I chose to mix the ginger in like nuts or chocolate chips to make them travel better. These are the best of a great trio.

As in the other book, this book includes brownies as cookies. I have a lot bookmarked here: Malted Oatmeal Bars, Maple Nut Chews, Midnight Brownies (made with Brazil nuts), and Spiced Sesame Bars.

This book is divided into two parts; I have not made any of the candy recipes yet but I have bookmarked Orange Coconut Brittle and Spicy Walnuts.

There is very little explanation here, but there are a handful of two-page spreads, such as one on shaping, decorating, and storing cookies, with tips such as "Store soft cookies in a tightly covered jar; tuck in an apple edge if they become dry."

The candy section includes the usual tips on how to test the doneness of candy without a thermometer.

If you're looking for a sixties/seventies cookies and candies book, this would be a great choice.
